JEREMIAH AND HEBREWS
The prophet Jeremiah records a promise of YAHWEH God in chapter 31, verse 33,
"But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD (or YAHWEH), "I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God and they shall be My people".
That promised new covenant is now a reality. The original uttering of that covenant promise was attributed to YAHWEH God, but let's now read Hebrews 10:15,
"And the HOLY SPIRIT also bears witness to us, for after saying, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days says the Lord; I will put my laws upon their heart, and upon their mind I will write them".
Another revelation of the one God, through the Father and the Holy Spirit, who are the one God.
ISAIAH AND ACTS
Another prophet, Isaiah, records in chapter 6, verses 8-10,
"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I. Send Me! and He said, "Go and tell this people; Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand." Render the hearts of this people insensitive. Their ears dull, And their eyes dim. Lest they see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, and repent and be healed."
When application of the Scripture was made in New Testament times by the apostle Paul, we find that the HOLY SPIRIT is credited with the utterance, in place of the Father. Acts 28:25-27 records,
"And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, "the Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers saying,
"Go to this people and say, "You will keep on hearing but will not understand; and you will keep on seeing, but will not perceive; for the heart of this people has become dull, and with their ears they scarcely hear, and they have closed their eyes; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart and turn again, and I should heal them."
Yes, the terms "God" and "Holy Spirit" interchange in Scripture. The Holy Spirit Himself is called "God" and He is that one true God.
So far, we have shown that both the Father Yahweh, and the Holy Spirit are called "God". Now we will consider Jesus Christ. Is He also called "God" in Scripture?
OUR GOD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST
Yes, in Scripture, Jesus is called "God", but is also spoken of as being "with God", or the "Son of God". In our natural thinking, we cannot understand the "mystery" of Jesus Christ.
For example, John 1:1 says,
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Right away, we are all thinking--how can Jesus be with God and yet be God? We cannot completely comprehend the infinite God with our finite minds. No wonder the whole early church exclaimed in common confession "great is the mystery of godliness" in 1 Timothy 3:16. We must either accept God's revelation of Himself to us, or we end up with unsatisfactory, man-made doctrines.
Cult and occult bibles usually read in John 1:1 that the Word was "a god", but this is a distortion of God's word. Just because there is a "mystrey" surrounding the God- head-head, this doesn't mean we cannot have correct knowledge concerning God, and in particular, Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:2 tells us to,
"...attain to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ Himself."
True knowledge is possible and desirable.
A TRUE KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS CHRIST
Is Jesus Christ called "God" in Scripture? The answer is a resounding "YES!" from all reliable Bible translations. The Angel announcing Jesus' birth said,
"Behold the Virgin shall be with Child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name "Immanuel", which translated means, "God with us" (Matthew 1:23).
The disciples believed Jesus to be God. Thomas exclaimed to the risen Christ, "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28,29). Jesus blessed him for saying this. The Apostle Paul admonished the elders in Acts 20:28 "to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood," proving that Jesus was indeed, God Incarnate.
GOD THE SON
We now call the Father, Yahweh God, as a witness to His Son's identity. The Father says in Hebrews 1:8,
"But of the Son He says, "Thy Throne, O God, is forever and ever."
If the Father calls the Son "God" (Ho Theos, "THE GOD " in Greek.) I choose to believe it. Jesus Christ is called the "true God" in 1 John 5:20, so we won't make the mistake of believing He is some kind of "extra god". Let's consider that Scripture,
"And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in order that we might know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life."
So far, we have looked at Scriptures calling Jesus, "God", and "the true God", and now we will move on to one that calls Him the "only God". 1 Timothy 1:16.17 says of Jesus Christ,
"And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen."
Jesus Christ is eternal, with no beginning and no end. He is God, the true God, the only God.
This is the plain teaching of the Scriptures, and anyone teaching that He is anything less, like the first creation of God or that He's some kind of extra god, or maybe an archangel named Michael, that false teacher is wresting the Scriptures to his own destruction, and I speak out strongly against this kind of heresy.
